The Lanvernite Succession
Authoritarian ruler of Lanverness, Bartleby Sax heads an autocratic regime backed by the power of the Iron Guard. Sax took power fifteen years ago when King Alfred died suddenly. Legally, Sax is regent of Lanverness, a caretaker waiting for Alfred’s son Prince Roland to come of age and assume the throne. Most observers assume that Roland is dead, possibly murdered by Sax; but since no body has ever been produced, Sax remains Regent. Some whisper that Roland may be alive and in hiding, but no one whispers such things very loudly for fear of who may be listening.
Sax never stays in one place for long. He greatly fears assassination, and every few days he travels to another of his palaces, escorted by an extensive security detail and multiple lookalikes.
