The Lanvernite Succession
Hawkschester is a nation of hardworking grain farmers, the Realm’s breadbasket. Ninety-five percent of the population is rural; most own their own land and most have never traveled more than ten miles from the place they were born. The capital Hawkschester City is not showy or grand; instead it focuses on handling and storing grain, grinding flour, and loading ships. The ships are owned by farmers’ collectives, not by companies, and payments are arranged years in advance to hedge fluctuations in output and prices.
Due to its focus on agriculture, Hawkschester does not have many martial or magical academies. For defense it relies on two militia prongs: farmers armed with simple weapons and a zeal for home defense, and the unusually large number of sorcerers that reliably emerge from the population. The country also benefits from the protection of the Great Northern Range and the Wyverncrest, which funnel potential land-based invaders through a narrow gap.
Hawkschester’s weather is typical of intensive grain-farming regions: rainy springs, warm, sunny summers and bitterly cold, windy, snowy winters. Hawkschester’s southern port city Earlstow provides some winter employment in the form of a warm-water whaling fleet, which sets sail every fall for the waters off Humberstoke, returning each spring in time for the planting.
